Label TextBarker did not begin studying lithography until his forties, but he quickly gained expertise through intensive experimentation, even developing his own formula for lithographic crayons. This night scene shows his ability to create atmosphere. Many different shades of gray are layered upon each other to describe stone, sky, and moonlight, evoking a serene stillness that is a hallmark of Barker's style. The distant horizon creates open space, inviting the viewer to enter the picture.
