The Stone Crusher

Date1930
Credit LineGift of Carl and Marian Mullis
Dimensions7 x 5 in. (17.8 x 12.7 cm)
Object number1994.016.007
Label TextThe bulky tower in the foreground and the farmhouse in the background anchor the scene and mark the landscape as a place transformed through human action. While the giant form of the crusher may seem foreboding, it should be noted that Barker's family were quarrymen, and therefore this structure represents not only abstract transformation of the earth but also family and livelihood.
