Label TextDuring the later 1930s many of Germany's most progressive artists were forced to flee Hitler's Third Reich. The Weiningers took refuge in the Netherlands in 1938. From 1942 to 1951 they lived and worked in Amsterdam. While Weininger continued to work in a Surrealist manner, he began to move towards an abstraction based on natural forms. The three Studies for Standing Figure (Stone Forms) from the 1950s show Weininger's further experimentation with this new vocabulary. In these preparatory works ovoid shapes are joined together to create a fantastic figure, but there is still a geometric logic underlying their arrangement.
