Label TextDuring the later 1930s many of Germany's most progressive artists were forced to flee Hitler's Third Reich. The Weiningers took refuge in the Netherlands in 1938. From 1942 to 1951 they lived and worked in Amsterdam. While Weininger continued to work in a Surrealist manner, he began to move towards an abstraction based on natural forms. The strikingly colorful and distinct shapes of Abstract Design of 1953 demonstrate the organic style of his painting while in Toronto.
