The Tapestry of Spring

Date1936
Credit LineGift of Carl and Marian Mullis
Dimensions14 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (36.8 x 29.2 cm)
Object number1994.016.005
Label TextBecause he was colorblind, Barker preferred to work in black and white. He chose lithography as his favored medium because it allowed him to make multiples of his drawings. In this print, quick details laid down with a fine line, with layers of different values fleshing out textures and spaces, portray an overgrown, pastoral landscape. The print recalls an era that was then slipping out of reach, as the United States experienced greater industrialization, the deprivation of the Depression and the Dust Bowl eras, and the tensions in Europe that would lead to World War II.
