Label TextHoward first pursued her art education in Portland, Oregon before moving to New York, where she studied at the Art Students League. This print documents winter life in the rural Hudson River Valley of New York. While the heavy sky and bare tree dominate the scene, the horse-team and driver pierce the space at the lower right, suggesting the movement of the plow through the snow. The nearly submerged house is a reminder of the power of nature, which easily overwhelms human creations. In this, Howard's print looks back to the sublime force of the wilderness found in nineteenth-century Hudson River School painting, which emphasized the awe-inspiring power of nature.
