Label TextLankes was prolific artist, creating more than 900 wood engravings, including commercial illustrations and custom bookplate designs. Like Asa Cheffetz, he was a contributor to the woodcut revival in the early twentieth century, and wrote an authoritative book on the topic. He moved from his New York home to Virginia in the 1920s, and his art quickly became associated with the rural Virginia landscape. Lankes worked in a variety of styles, from rough, expressionistic prints in stark black and white to finely detailed images with a wide tonal range. This American Artists Group print is typical of his more meticulous work, with lines defining both textures and tones to form an image of productive farmland. The burst of light behind the topmost figure and the rolling hills in the distance signal a sense of hope, renewal, and bounty.Exhibition HistoryPresident Chace's Office, Emory University, November 9, 1995 - March 18, 1996
