Label TextThe citizens of Athens sat on wooden bleachers to view the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides in the fifth century BC. A permanent theater in stone was not built until the latter half of the fourth century BC as part of an overall program of renewal under the statesman Lykourgos. The design of the orchestra, the floor where the chorus danced, and the stage building were modified several times in the course of the Roman era.
