Label TextSilenos, one of the companions of Dionysos, was depicted as a stout old man, often drunk. The character of Silenos led the chorus in the satyr plays that accompanied performances of tragedy at the Great Dionysia festival. This relief is thought to have originally been part of the decoration of the stage building sponsored by the Roman emperor Hadrian in the second century AD.
