Label TextThe broad humor of Homer's early genre scenes brought him great popularity. Here a group of men and women of all ages have come together to peel apples. The young lady at the center of the illustration has just dropped a length of peel behind her. The custom was that she would kiss whichever youth had the same initial as the letter of the alphabet formed when the peel hit the floor. The couples kissing in the background at the right can be seen acting upon this opportunity for flirtation and courtship.Exhibition HistoryWinslow Homer in Print, Michael C.
