Label TextAn epigram attributed to the Greek poet Addaios describes a beryl engraved by the artist Tryphon with an image of the sea nymph Galene that was so realistic that she looked as though she might swim clear of the stone completely (Palatine Anthology 9.544). The gem-device evoked by Addaios may be similar to that carved on this gem: a woman with streaming hair and drapery moves left, her forward motion enlivened by the play of light on the polished surface of the stone.
