Label TextThe engraver of this intaglio has selected a mottled green chalcedony to evoke the ocean depths through which the triton engraved on its surface swims; incised lines around his forelegs and tail suggest his forward motion. Half-man, half-fish, tritones were mythical sea-creatures that became popular on engraved gems following Octavian/Augustus’s defeat of Mark Antony in a naval battle at Actium in 27 BCE: this triton plays two pipes, as though heralding Octavian’s triumph.
