Label TextThe image of a drunken Dionysos leaning heavily against a youthful Eros was popular on Hellenistic gems, as also on mirror covers and other toiletry items. On such objects, used for cosmetic enhancement and personal adornment, the motif promotes the desirability of tryphe, a concept of luxuriousness, delicacy, and excess, of which Dionysos was the embodiment.
