Label TextReplicating banded agate, this glass gem depicts a military trophy composed of Gallic armor, including a cuirass, horned helmet, axe, carnyx (Celtic trumpet), and oval shield. The motif was widely replicated on coinage minted under Julius Caesar in 48-47 BCE to celebrate his triumph over the Gauls, and it is probable that glass gems bearing the same motif were produced for soldiers in his army as mementoes of victory and expressions of loyalty.
