The motif is paralleled by numerous representations of generic and mythological craftsmen at work, which were especially popular on late Republican and early Imperial gemstones. Such images draw attention to the artistry of the intaglio itself, to the labor involved in its minute workmanship, and thus also to its luxuriousness, eliciting pleasure from contemplation of the gem-engraver’s skill.
