Label TextAntinous, the young companion and lover of the emperor Hadrian (117-138 CE), was venerated as a hero and god following his death in 130 CE. Famed for his beauty, his idealized portrait was widely replicated in sculpture, coinage and on engraved gems. Set in a bronze ring, this glass cameo catered to a less affluent buyer than more costly hardstone versions, but replicates the same pouting lips, long, luscious curls, and chlamys (pinned cloak) typical of all Antinous’ portraits. The reduced scale renders Antinous’ visage intimately accessible, allowing the ring to be a vehicle of erotic desire as much as an expression of religious devotion.Exhibition HistoryMaking an Impression: The Art and Craft of Ancient Engraved Gemstones, Michael C.
