Label TextRosenquist's work has been acclaimed since the 1960s for the exuberance of his color and the dynamism of his forms. Having come of age amid the abundance of America in the 1950s, the artist has infused his paintings and prints with what he describes as the colors of the supermarket, "a big splashy array of Day-Glo colored cereal and soap boxes." In this recent lithograph Rosenquist has taken the familiar forms found in the laundry aisle and warped them into a dizzying swirl of color that seems to pull the viewer into its central vortex. The title of the print refers to a monumental project which Rosenquist had recently completed for the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. In the 160-foot long Swimmer in the Econo-mist (1997-98) Rosenquist deployed the same "roaring spin-cycle of distorted popular imagery," as one critic has put it. Rosenquist, who has worked with Graphicstudio since 1971, once said that "a lithograph is like a BLT sandwich; you put layers and layers together one on top of the other, and that produces its own sparkle against the white." This lithograph is a very big sandwich indeed being produced from ten plates and ten different colors.
