Label TextDelaune worked as a goldsmith, engraver, and draughtsman. His prints, and his designs for jewelry and other objects, disseminated the style of the Fontainebleau School throughout northern Europe. This style, characterized by elegant, elongated figures and detailed ornamentation, was brought to France by Italian artists working for Francis I. These two engravings are part of a series of twelve. In addition to images of triumph and victory, the series includes scenes of combat between different groups - soldiers, nude men, Lapiths and centaurs, and peasants. Each scene is set in a long, shallow field against a dark background. This frieze-like arrangement points to Delaune's use of Roman relief sculpture as a model.
