Label TextThe device on this gem replicates the iconography of a famed cult statue of the goddess Tyche (Good Fortune) made c. 300 BCE by Eutychides of Sikyon for the newly founded city of Antioch in Syria. She is shown seated, with a personification of the river Orontes at her feet, and is flanked by Fortuna (Fortune) and a soldier offering her a victory wreath. Perhaps a souvenir of a visit to Tyche’s temple in Antioch, the gem gives its viewer personal, portable access to the goddess and her good favor.
