The Whitney Museum of American Art, one of the most controversial buildings erected in New York, is to be opened on September 28, at the corner of Madison Avenue and 75th Street. Designed by Marcel Breuer, a graduate of the Bauhaus in German, the £2 million museum has been compared to an inverted ziggurat, or step-pyramid, although succeeding storeys project on one side only. Irregularly shaped windows were included by Breuer as a concession to those who expected windows in such a building
