Label TextThis intaglio, with its profile bust of a satyr wearing an ivy wreath and a nebris (animal skin cloak), brings the viewer face to face with one of Dionysus’ wild followers, perhaps inviting personal communion. Wearing the stone in a ring, the wearer might even have imagined him- or herself assuming the satyr’s persona, providing a body and legs for him to run and dance.Exhibition HistoryMaking an Impression: The Art and Craft of Ancient Engraved Gemstones, Michael C.
