Label TextGoldblatt was born in South Africa to Jewish parents who had fled persecution in Lithuania in the 1890s. With this heritage he was innately opposed to the system of apartheid that defined his country for over forty years. The conditions of enormous social disparity between blacks and whites in South Africa became Goldblatt's subject as a professional photographer. He did not try to capture dramatic events, but rather sought to document the inequality that permeated everyday situations, as in this photograph of Eloff Street, the main shopping district in Johannesburg.Exhibition HistoryRenaissance to Contemporary: Recent Acquisitions in Works on Paper, Michael C.
