West Facade of the Propylaia

Dateca. 1870
Credit LineGift of Mr. and Mrs. William Knight Zewadski
Object number1991.012.064
Label TextThe word propylaia means gateways. This monumental entrance to the Acropolis was built by the architect Mnesikles between 437 and 432 BC. Its five central doorways and the projecting north and south wings embrace the approach ramp from the Panathenaic Way. Like the Parthenon, it is constructed in Pentelic marble and combines Doric and Ionic features, and, thus, serves as an introduction to the temple that stands behind it.
