Label TextIn the distance across the Attic plain, the tall masts of sailing ships moored at the port of Piraeus are just barely discernible. The Monument of Philopappos on the "Hill of the Muses" southwest of the Acropolis was a favorite spot for early photographers to capture panoramic views in all directions. The monument, erected between AD 114 and 116, was the elaborately ornamented tomb of a Syrian prince who became a citizen of Athens and was a great benefactor to the city.Exhibition HistoryThe Camera and Antiquity, Michael C.
