Label TextLupertz is a painter and sculptor of the same generation as Georg Baselitz. Their work is often exhibited together, along with that of other German artists who came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s and whose work is classified variously as Neo-Expressionism or "New German Painting." Like Baselitz, Lupertz's style is figurative but not naturalistic. His forms are fragmented and abstracted in the manner of early twentieth-century movements like Cubism and Expressionism. His subjects are allusive, referring to mythological themes or certain moments in the history of art. In the prints displayed here the black bird recalls the one depicted in Edouard Manet's etchings illustrating the French translation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. The skull at the upper left-hand corner of Evening #1 is a motif drawn from another era of art history, the Vanitas of seventeenth-century Dutch painting in which the skull speaks of the transience of human life.
