Nazi Era Provenance List
From 1933 to 1945, Europe’s cultural heritage was subjected to Nazi confiscations and forced sales, as well as general wartime looting. Despite the best efforts of multiple countries and cultural institutions after World War II, many works remain unaccounted for and unknowingly made their way into private collections and museums across the world. As part of its larger commitment to provenance research, the Carlos is in the process of researching works that were acquired from 1933 and may have been in continental Europe during the Nazi Era. The works highlighted in our online collection have gaps in their provenance between 1932 and 1946 or have names in their provenance that are associated with Nazi looting. There is currently no evidence that any object in our collection was involved in Nazi looting, but the Carlos compiled this list in the interest of transparency. As provenance research is a continuous and ongoing process, these records will be updated as more information becomes available.
